Two of the most helpful things I have ever done for myself as a sub is to 1) keep a folder handy, with directions & contact members of every school, extra copies of my business card, copies of lesson plans and other day-to-day necessiteis and 2) I have a letter with my 5 essential rules and a statement ( i agree to behave) written on it– i have this on an overhead. Going into the classroom i ask students to copy all the info down onto a piece of paper, which gives me proof of students knowing hte rules, then fold hte paper and use it as a name tent… this cuts out misbehavior almost entirely. works best in middle school, but works well in high-school too.
