Major General James A. Garfield. He fought at the Battles of Shiloh and Chickamauga and eventually became Chief of Staff of the Army of the Cumberland. He was later elected as the 20th President of the United States. However, he was assassinated by a disgruntled office seeker. His assassination led to the Pendleton Civil Service Act of 1883.
