Federal troops fording a tributary of the Rappahannock River, near the site of the 2nd Battle of Bull Run. This battle pitted 62,000 Federal troops under Major General Pope against Generals Longstreet (30,000 troops) and Jackson (25,000 troops). An outmaneuvered and bewildered Pope was soundly defeated but casualties were high on both sides. The Union army lost 15,000, and the Confederate army lost 9,000 men.
