Battlefields and Vicinity

Courtesy of Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, LC-B8171-2384 DLC

Federal position at Gettysburg as seen from Little Round Top. The Battle of Gettysburg which took place over three days has been called the turning point of the Civil War. General Meade (U) fought against Generals Lee (C) and Longstreet (C). On the first and second days of battle, the Confederates seemed to be faring well. However, even though General Pickett led a fearsome attack on the third day in what has been called 'Pickett's Charge', the Union was able to withstand the massive onslaught of Pickett's 15,000 fresh troops. The confederates eventually had to withdraw from the field of battle. At the end of the third day, each side had lost approximately 23,000 men.
