The
bomb-proof quarters of Fort Sedgwick in Petersburg, Virginia, also known as
"Fort Hell." This was located in the city through which all but one
rail line passed to Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy. General Grant
laid siege here from June 1864-April 1865 and forced General Lee to stay and
fight a defensive battle he could not win. After months of siege, Grant was
able to force the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond which brought about
the end of the war.
1865.
