Creating an 'I Make a Difference Scrapbook'

As the years pass, teachers accumulate 'stuff'. A lot of that 'stuff' is less than useful in the long run. But some of it, those few gems, are valuable and precious to you if to nobody else. I am, of course, talking about items that students have given you over the years. Each year you probably receive cards, photos, and letters from students and former students, many of them thanking you for teaching and influencing them. Every once in awhile, you might even get recognized by parents, administration, or professional organizations, too. Instead of filing all of this recognition away, create an album that you can go back to time and again. This is particularly useful when you are feeling down and depressed; when teacher burnout is raging full force. At this point, pull out your scrapbook and rekindle why you became a teacher in the first place. You are special and you do indeed make a difference!
