Early Influences:

  • Father, James Hamilton, never married his mother
  • Father abandoned the family in 1765
  • Worked as a clerk and later bookkeeper/manager at a trading post in St. Croix


  • Friends collected funds to send Hamilton to New York for a college education in 1772
  • Entered King's College in 1774 (now Columbia University)

Major Accomplishments:

  • Served as aide-de-camp to General Washington with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel
  • Served as a member of the Continental Congress from 1782-1783
  • Attended the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787
  • Appointed first Secretary of the Treasury by President George Washington 1789-1795
  • Initiated the 'Hamiltonian System', a plan for centralizing and reinvigorating the national economy - 1791
  • Developed plans for a congressional charter for the First Bank of the United States


  • Co-authored the Federalist Papers with John Jay and James Madison
  • The driving force behind the ratification of the U.S. Constitution
  • The only New York delegate to the Constitutional Convention to sign the Constitution
  • Recommended a 'Revenue Marine' force today called the U.S. Coast Guard
  • Played a crucial role in creating the U.S. Navy with the Naval Act of 1794
  • When the House of Representatives was forced to decide the election of 1800, he championed Thomas Jefferson over Aaron Burr
