Confucianism

A Chinese philosophy that in its most basic form deals with man's relationships with fellow man. All relationships must be approached with virtue which comes from having li and jen.

li - decorum and etiquette
jen - humanity and love

Confucius taught that there were five fundamental relationships:

  • ruler to subject
  • father to son
  • husband to wife
  • brother to brother
  • friend to friend

Confucius stated that if everyone did their part in these relationships life would be better.

It is important to remember that the ideas of Confucius arose during the Warring States period, a time of great upheaval.
