First Battle of Bull Run, July, 1861. View of the Battlefield. This battle pitted the 2nd in the West Point Class of 1838, P.G.T. Beauregard (C) against the 23rd in the same class, Irwin McDowell (U). The Confederates also threw in Joe Johnston for additional leadership. The 29,000 Confederates soundly defeated the 35,000 Union soldiers in this clash of amateur armies. At this fateful battle, Brigadier General T.J. Jackson (C) received his nickname when Brigadier General Barnard Bee rallied his troops by saying, "There is Jackson standing like a stonewall."
