How is a Teacher Like Pregnant Woman?
Nine Months Is Only the Beginning
Pregnancy and teaching share more in common than you might think. I hope you enjoy this comparison look at the joys of teaching and pregnancy!

Teaching Pregnancy
First Trimester
  • First weeks pass in a blur of excitement and preparation
  • Teachers feel a tinge of regret over lost freedom of summer
  • Within a few weeks teachers learn the names of their students
  • Very tired in the beginning because not used to the daily grind of going to work
  • Teachers often get sick in the beginning because they are exposed to new germs

  • First-time parents feel a tinge of regret over lost freedom of having no children
  • Parents begin to search for the perfect name for their baby
  • Future Moms are very tried because of the changes in their bodies
  • New Mothers (and sometimes Fathers) experience Morning Sickness
Second Trimester
  • Teachers are resigned to the fact that they still have over half of the school year to go before summer
  • Teachers become focused and some even enjoy themselves once they get a daily rhythm established
  • Teachers often get the desire to organize their files/notes at this time'
  • Teachers find time to attend some inservices and other methods of teacher education
  • Standardized testing season begins
  • Pregnant women are resigned to the fact that they still have over half of the pregnancy to go
  • Pregnant women are feeling physically better and are able to get a lot done in preparation for the baby
  • Pregnant women sometimes get into a 'nesting phase' where they wish to organize and clean
  • Pregnant parents attend Lamaze classes
  • Numerous tests are performed to make sure Mother and baby and doing well
Third Trimester
  • Students are beginning to get restless as summer approaches
  • Teachers are beginning to feel ready to say goodbye to this year's class
  • Teachers feel excitement yet some are worried that they did not cover enough material/prepare the students thoroughly for the following year
  • Final preparations are being made for the end of the school year
  • Baby is really moving and Mother is getting restless as the due date approaches
  • Pregnant Mother is beginning to feel uncomfortable and to be ready to have the baby
  • Parents are excited yet worried that they are not prepared to have a new baby
  • Final preparations are being made for the arrival of the new baby
Labor/Delivery
  • Students are cramming for their Final Exams'
  • Final exams are given
  • Sometimes it is painful to see kids go (or just difficult to get some to leave)
  • Students say their final goodbyes and leave for the summer
  • It is sometimes a bittersweet experience because it is the end of a school year and you will most probably not have those students in your class again
  • Parents are completing their last minute preparations including packing the suitcase
  • The Pregnant woman goes into labor
  • Obviously, childbirth is painful
  • The baby is born
  • It can sometimes be bittersweet for the new Mother once the baby is born because he/she is now a separate entity from the Mother
