Following is a look at what one teacher actually did during a typical week of planning time. Hopefully this will show not only why teachers need this time, but also why they end up taking a lot of their work home. Note: In this example, the teacher has a generous 60 minute planning period each day.

Monday's Planning Period

  • Walk from classroom to teacher's work room - 5 min.
  • Check attendance records and write tardy detention slips - 7 min.
  • Take detention slips to deans' mailboxes - 4 min.
  • Take a bathroom break - 5 min.
  • Take papers out of brief case and sort for work - 2 min.
  • Answer unexpected parent phone call - 6 min.
  • Discuss a teaching strategy with colleague - 4 min.
  • Grade nine essays spending three minutes with each - 27 min.

Tuesday's Planning Period

  • Walk from classroom to teacher's work room - 5 min.
  • Check attendance records and write tardy detention slips - 7 min.
  • Take detention slips to deans' mailboxes - 4 min.
  • Take a bathroom break - 5 min.
  • Attend a committee meeting - 30 min.
  • Go to dean's office to get passes, detentions and referrals - 6 min.
  • Chat with campus officer - 3 min.

Wednesday's Planning Period

  • Attend an IEP meeting for a Special Education student - 45 min.
  • Check attendance records and write tardy detention slips - 7 min.
  • Take a bathroom break - 5 min.
  • Drink a cup of coffee - 3 min.

Thursday's Planning Period

  • Walk from classroom to teacher's work room - 5 min.
  • Check attendance records and write tardy detention slips - 7 min.
  • Take a bathroom break - 5 min.
  • Write next week's lesson plans in plan book - 30 min.
  • Make a parent phone call about a truant student - 6 min.
  • Speak to the dean about a referral - 7 min.

Friday's Planning Period

  • Walk from classroom to teacher's work room - 5 min.
  • Check attendance records and write tardy detention slips - 7 min.
  • Write a short quiz - 19 min.
  • Take a bathroom break - 5 min.
  • Grade six essays spending three minutes with each - 18 min.
  • Enter cooperative learning grades for one assignment to all five classes - 6 min.
