Tennessee Teacher Certification

Basic Steps for the Apprentice Tennessee Teacher Certification:

You must hold a bachelor's degree and complete a teacher preparation program. If you compelte your preparation program from a Tennessee college or university, your license will be called an Apprentice Teacher License. If your prep program was in an approved out-of-state program then you will be issued an Out-of-State License. You must also receive a recommendation from your college or university and pass the Tennessee PRAXIS exams. The Apprentice or Out-of-State Licenses are both valid for five years.

Information for Teachers Certified Elsewhere:

If you are certified elsewhere and move to Tennessee, you may be eligible to receive a Tennessee License without passing the PRAXIS exam. This depends on when you became fully certified in your state and if your state has a reciprocal agreement with Tennessee. You can find out more information specific to this on their licensing website.

Information for the Professional License:

Once you have your Apprentice or Out-of-State License, you will need to teach for three of the next five years in a public or state accredited private school and receive positive evaluations. Upon proof of this, you will be eligible for your Professional License that is valid for 10 years. If you do not complete the required years of teaching in the first five years, you can renew your initial license for five additional years.
