Question: What are the issues surrounding teacher tenure?
Answer: Some people argue that tenure is not necessarily a good thing. This is because it can cause major roadblocks to removing incompetent teachers. In fact, some schools have been known to keep incompetent teachers so that they do not have to deal with tenure issues. Further, in certain school districts tenure rules are so powerful that truly incompetent teachers are protected. On the other hand, teachers fear that if tenure is removed they will have no protection from removal for issues unrelated to their job performance.
