Teaching Tip of the Day

September 7 - Classroom Materials

By Melissa Kelly, About.com

As a teacher, you have to determine how you will deal with students not bringing the proper classroom materials. Each teacher will have their own method for handling this. Some will just have a ready stock on hand. However, this can get out of control if students take advantage and never bring their own items. One way to solve this problem is to have students swap an item of theirs for the loan of a material like a pencil. This will help ensure that you will get your pencil back. For example, students could leave a shoe with you while they use your pencil and then return it at the end of the period to get their shoe back. This has the added benefit of being humorous. You do not want to trade for a very valuable item like an iPod. You are responsible for that item if somehow it is stolen.
